Ends playing career
McCourty has announced his retirement from the NFL, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The 35-year-old joined the Patriots as a first-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and finishes up his professional playing career with a total of 971 tackles and 35 picks over the course of 205 regular-season contests. In his final campaign with the only NFL team he ever played for, the Rutgers product logged 71 tackles and four interceptions while holding down a starting safety slot for New England in 2022.

Rehabbing from shoulder surgery
McCourty recently underwent shoulder surgery and is currently rehabbing, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: McCourty appeared in all 17 regular-season games for New England and played every single defensive snap in all but four of those contests. The veteran safety is believed to have suffered the shoulder injury during a Week 14 game against the Cardinals, but he didn't miss a snap in Weeks 15-18. Per Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site, the 35-year-old hasn't made a decision on if he'll play next season.

Leads team in interceptions
McCourty registered 71 tackles (54 solo), four interceptions and a fumble recovery while playing in all 17 games during the 2022 season.
Analysis: McCourty had another effective season despite his age, as he tied for the most interceptions and second most pass deflections on the team. The 2010 first-round pick is an unrestricted free agent this offseason and is also expected to consider retiring, so while it's still unknown if he'll play next year the veteran safety has shown he can still produce at a high level for either the Patriots or another team.

Absent from injury report
McCourty (head) is not listed on the Patriots' injury report ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Raiders.
Analysis: McCourty left Monday's 27-23 victory over the Cardinals early due to a head injury. His full participation at Wednesday's practice indicates the issue is not serious. Barring any setbacks, he should be good to go for the team's Week 15 matchup with the Raiders.

Doesn't finish game
McCourty left in the fourth quarter of Monday's win over the Cardinals to be evaluated for a head injury, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: McCourty entered the medical tent after being involved in a hard tackle, but no official word on whether he suffered a concussion was reported. He did tell Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald that he was fine after the game, so it would appear he did not, but no official word on his status has been reported. His practice level in the days ahead should shed a better light on his abilities to suit up Sunday against the Raiders.

Two picks in win
McCourty recorded six tackles (three solo) and two interceptions during Sunday's 22-17 win versus the Jets.
Analysis: McCourty logged his first interceptions of the season to end two straight Jets drives in the second half. The 13th-year defensive back also played 100 percent of the Patriots' defensive snaps for the first time since Week 4, as fellow safety Kyle Dugger (ankle) was ruled inactive pregame. McCourty has recorded 42 tackles (34 solo) and three passes defended over eight games this season.

Team-high eight tackles
McCourty recorded eight tackles (seven solo) during Sunday's 37-26 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: McCourty led the team with eight tackles and set a new season high. Across three games, the veteran safety has totaled 17 tackles and one pass defense. However, he's yet to record an interception, which he's done at least once in each of his first 12 NFL seasons.

Returning to Patriots
McCourty (thumb) signed a one-year, $9 million contract with the Patriots on Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: McCourty will rejoin the Patriots for a 13th consecutive season after he appeared in all 17 games last year and totaled 60 tackles (42 solo), three interceptions and 10 pass defenses. The 34-year-old has remained dependable in recent years, as he was on the field for 89 percent of the team's defensive snaps last year and hasn't missed a game in any of the last six seasons. He underwent a minor thumb procedure in January, but the issue shouldn't impact his availability ahead of the 2022 campaign.

Undergoes minor surgery
McCourty recently underwent a minor procedure on his right thumb, but he's still planning on playing next season, Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal reports.
Analysis: McCourty's contract will become void at the end of the NFL season, making him a free agent. However, there's still a possibility he returns to the Patriots next year. He started all 17 games for New England during the 2021 campaign and totaled 60 tackles, 10 pass deflections and three interceptions.

Secures third interception
McCourty had six tackles (five solo) and an interception during Saturday's 27-17 loss to the Colts.
Analysis: QB Carson Wentz attempted only 12 passes for Indianapolis with Jonathan Taylor leading the offense on the ground, but McCourty was still able to grab his third pick of the campaign. It was only the fourth time this season the veteran safety has recorded five or more tackles in a game, and he doesn't offer much upside as an IDP option.

Not listed on injury report
McCourty (abdomen) did not appear on the Patriots' first injury report of the week Wednesday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: The 34-year-old suffered the abdomen injury in the team's Week 7 victory over the Jets but said he's going to "work his butt off" to be available Sunday versus the Chargers. McCourty seems to have a strong chance to be active this weekend after logging a full practice Wednesday. The safety has 27 tackles, two pass deflections and an interception through seven games in 2021.

Questionable to return
McCourty suffered an injury to his abdomen in Sunday's matchup against the Jets and is questionable to return.
Analysis: McCourty picked up the injury in the first half of the contest after racking up two tackles. Cody Davis is likely to see a bigger role in McCourty's absence.

Snares INT
McCourty posted five tackles (four solo), a pass breakup and an interception in Sunday's 25-6 win over the Jets.
Analysis: McCourty was one of three Patriots players to intercept a Zach Wilson pass in Week 2. He's now up to 12 tackles through two games. The 2010 first-round pick has never topped 97 stops in a season.

Records 68 tackles
McCourty finished the 2020 season with 68 tackles and two interceptions (including one returned for a TD) in 16 games.
Analysis: McCourty, who turns 34 in August, is under contract with New England for 2021 and plans to play next season, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports. The 2010 first-rounder -- who hasn't missed a game since 2015 -- is thus in line to reprise his starting free safety role for the Patriots, an assignment that carries with it a degree of fantasy utility.

Ready for Week 17
McCourty (shoulder) is active for Sunday's game versus the Jets.
Analysis: McCourty will avoid missing his first game since the 2015 season. The 33-year-old will start at free safety Sunday, looking to add to the 62 tackles, six pass breakups and two interceptions he's accrued thus far.

Tagged questionable for finale
McCourty (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's matchup against the Jets.
Analysis: McCourty provided limited sessions Thursday and Friday after sitting out Wednesday's practice. While New England's postseason aspirations have already been dashed coming into Week 17, McCourty has an opportunity to extend his active games streak to 81 with an appearance against the division-rival Jets.

Practice status improves
McCourty (shoulder) was listed as a limited participant for Thursday's practice session.
Analysis: McCourty hasn't missed a game all year, and he's sat out just five of a possible 175 regular-season contests since entering the NFL in 2010. As such, the fact that he's trending positively for Week 17 almost assures the veteran's presence in the lineup. If indeed available for a season finale against the Jets, McCourty would look to improve upon the 105.5 passer rating he's surrendered in coverage this season. Last year, the two-time Pro Bowler held opponents to a rating of 61.0 over 33 targets.

Non-participant at practice
McCourty (shoulder) was unable to participate at Wednesday's practice, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston reports.
Analysis: McCourty injured his shoulder in last week's loss to the Bills. He was ultimately unable to return, and his absence Wednesday does not bode well for his Week 17 status. Some combination of Joejuan Williams and Justin Bethel would presumably be in line to replace him should he have to miss the regular-season finale.

Officially out
McCourty (shoulder) has now been ruled out for the remainder of Monday's game against the Bills.
Analysis: McCourty has not seen the field for the majority of the second half of the contest. Terrence Brooks will continue to slot in as a replacement for McCourty.

Questionable to return
McCourty is dealing with a shoulder injury and is questionable to return to Monday's matchup with the Bills.
Analysis: Given that the game appears to be out of hand, the Patriots may opt to play it safe and keep their veteran safety sidelined for the remainder of the night. In his absence, Terrence Brooks has been logging snaps at safety.

Not on injury report
McCourty (undisclosed) isn't on Wednesday's injury report.
Analysis: McCourty missed this past Saturday's practice, but he's not in danger of missing the game now that it has been pushed back a week to this coming Sunday. The veteran safety has 11 tackles and an interception that he returned for a touchdown through four games.

Misses practice, expects to play
McCourty was absent from Saturday's practice for an undisclosed reason but is still expected to play in Monday's matchup with the Broncos, Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: It does not sound like there is any concern surrounding McCourty's absence. Barring a turn in events, look for the defensive captain to take on his usual role Monday night.

Signs two-year deal
McCourty signed a two-year, $23 million deal with New England on Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The Patriots didn't let McCourty test the open market, and the team leader and standout safety is now locked up for another two years. However, the 32-year-old is a curious fantasy case considering he's fresh off a career low in tackles (58) but a nine-year high in interceptions (five).

Staying with New England
McCourty announced on his Youtube channel that he is returning to New England in 2020.
Analysis: The financials aren't clear, but McCourty presumably got a nice payday from New England because the team clearly didn't want him to hit the open market Wednesday.

Will test free agency
McCourty said Thursday that he intends to play in 2020 and will explore free agency, Ben Volin of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: McCourty, who has played his entire 10-year NFL career in New England, is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. The 32-year-old has made his intention to keep playing clear, but it remains to be seen if he'll don a Patriots uniform in 2020 or land with another club. As Volin reports, McCourty last explored free agency in 2015 before ultimately inking a five-year contract with New England.

Will be UFA in March
McCourty posted 58 tackles, seven pass breakups, five interceptions and two forced fumbles across 16 regular-season games in 2019.
Analysis: McCourty performed well in a contract year, posting his best interception total since the 2012 season. With the free safety's contract expiring in March, McCourty has made it clear he wants to continue playing in pursuit of at least one more big payday, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. Whether he stays in New England is yet to be determined, as the market is yielding salaries over $10 million for top safeties and could price the Patriots out in the bidding for his services.

Logs six tackles in win
McCourty was credited with six tackles (five solo) in Saturday's 24-17 win over the Bills.
Analysis: McCourty's tackle production has fallen off this year as he'll need 11 tackles in Week 17 to avoid setting a new career low. He's more than made up for it with five interceptions, however.

Three tackles in win
McCourty notched three tackles (one solo) during Sunday's 34-13 win over the Bengals.
Analysis: McCourty handled 55 snaps on defense (83 percent) during the Week 15 win after having played 100 percent for the last six contests. The veteran safety began the season by notching an interception in four straight contests, but he's now gone seven consecutive weeks without picking off an opposing quarterback.

Totals nine tackles
McCourty had nine tackles (seven solo) and a forced fumble during Sunday's 23-17 loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: McCourty set a season high with the nine tackles and nearly equaled his tackle total from the previous three contests (10 tackles). The 32-year-old had a strong start with an interception in each of the first four games of 2019, but his low tackle totals (3.6 average) limit his IDP value.

Season-high seven stops
McCourty tallied seven tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: McCourty's interception surge (four through the first four games) has tapered off some with just one pick over the last five contests. However, he's starting to look like the sound tackler he used to be. He's marked at least 80 tackles in three straight seasons leading up to this campaign, so Sunday's performance is reminiscent of that. McCourty and the Patriots' defense will lick their wounds over their upcoming bye and look to get back on track Week 11 against the Eagles.
