Signs with Detroit
Niemann signed with the Lions on Monday.
Analysis: The veteran linebacker played in seven games and on 131 special teams snaps for Denver in 2023, but he did not play a down on defense. Niemann did record a career-high 70 tackles the year before with the Cardinals, and he finished with at least 44 tackles every year from 2019 through 2021 with the Chiefs. In Detroit, Niemann should have a chance to compete for playing time behind outside linebackers Derrick Barnes and Jack Campbell.

Off injury report
Niemann (concussion) is no longer listed on the Chiefs' injury report Wednesday.
Analysis: Niemann suffered a concussion in the Chiefs' win over the Eagles in Week 4 and he was forced to exit the game early. After clearing concussion protocols Monday, Niemann is expected to be available to play in Week 5 against the Bills.

Clears concussion protocol
Coach Andy Reid said Monday that Niemann has cleared concussion protocol, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Niemann made two solo tackles during Sunday's victory, but he was unable to finish the game due to a concussion. He has made great progress and cleared protocols, but his status for Week 5 is still up in the air. Niemann has played a prominent role for Kansas City's defense with Willie Gay (toe) on injured reserve, so his absence against the Bills' high-powered offense would be a big loss.

Enters concussion protocol
Niemann suffered a concussion in Sunday's 42-30 win over the Eagles, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Niemann racked up two solo tackles in Sunday's victory, but he was unable to finish the game due to a concussion. Now that he's in the concussion protocol, he'll have several steps to clear if he hopes to play in the team's Week 5 matchup against the Bills.

Over hamstring injury
Niemann (hamstring) wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report.
Analysis: Niemann injured his hamstring in practice in early August, but he has subsequently recovered over the past month. The linebacker is expected to suit up without limitations for Sunday's season opener against the Browns.

Leaves practice early
Niemann (hamstring) left practice Saturday, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Niemann walked off the practice field under his own power and was evaluated for a tweaked hamstring. The extent of the injury is unknown, but it is likely that the Chiefs won't rush him back during training camp, as he suffered a similar injury at the end of last season. The 26-year-old was forced to miss three weeks with his hamstring injury last year, but it is unclear if his most recent tweak occurred on the same leg.

Practicing Wednesday
Niemann was listed as a full participant on Wednesday's practice report.
Analysis: After missing Week 17's game against the Chargers, Niemann has had time to recover and is making progress in his hamstring injury. The inside linebacker hopefully should be ready to return for Sunday's AFC divisional-round game against the Browns.

Will sit out Sunday
Niemann (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Niemann suffered a hamstring injury during last week's win over the Falcons. It would've been tough to return in Week 17 under normal circumstances, and there's no reason to rush him back with the top spot in the AFC locked up. Darius Harris likely will bump into a starting role in the season finale.

Dealing with hamstring issue
Niemann (hamstring) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Falcons.
Analysis: The inside linebacker made quite an impact before his first-half exit, notching a forced fumble and three tackles (including one for loss). Kansas City will have to rotate a defender in from another position if Niemann proves unable to return to the contest, with Anthony Hitchens remaining on the reserve/COVID-19 list and Dorian O'Daniel (ankle) on injured reserve.

Records first career sack
Niemann tallied two tackles (both solo), including his first career sack Monday versus the Ravens.
Analysis: Niemann continues to rotate in among a deep group of linebackers for the Chiefs, playing 43 percent of the snaps in Monday's contest. While it produced his first career sack, Niemann also saw a downturn in defensive snap percentage and just two tackles after racking up nine a week ago. He doesn't see the field enough at the moment to warrant IDP consideration in most formats.

Settles in as rotational linebacker
Niemann amassed 56 tackles (35 solo) and one pass breakup while appearing in all 16 of the Chiefs' regular-season games in 2019.
Analysis: While many teams are utilizing linebacker-heavy packages less often these days in the pass-driven NFL, Niemann logged north of 400 defensive snaps thanks in part to starter Anthony Hitchens missing a pair of games in the middle of the season. Niemann should serve in a similar reserve role in 2020, but he could see his playing time increase if one or more starting linebackers misses time.
