Signs with Houston
Carter and the Texans agreed to terms on a one-year deal Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Carter will head to Houston after playing in seven games for Cleveland last season, where the 2018 fifth-round pick logged 16 tackles (eight solo) while playing on both defense and special teams. The 28-year-old should compete for a spot as a reserve linebacker and special teamer heading into the 2023 campaign.

Signing with Kansas City
Carter is signing with the Chiefs on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Carter spent the first four seasons of his career with the Panthers, and he hasn't missed a game during that time. He racked up a career-high 88 tackles (38 solo) with a pass defense and a fumble recovery in 2021, and he should have a chance to carve out a prominent role among Kansas City's linebackers.

Makes six stops
Carter finished with six tackles (three solo) in Sunday's 41-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Carter trailed only Myles Hartsfield in stops, with his tally including one tackle for loss. In 17 games this season, Carter had the most productive statistical campaign of his four-year career, racking up 88 tackles, including 8.5 stuffs at the line of scrimmage and recovering a fumble. The former fifth-round pick will now see what his value is as an unrestricted free agent this offseason, with it currently being unclear whether the Panthers will attempt to re-sign him.

Active for Week 17
Carter (groin) is active for Sunday's contest against the Saints, Jonathan M. Alexander of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: Carter was a limited participant in practice all week, but he will be available for the Panthers on Sunday. The middle linebacker has 76 tackles in 15 appearances this season, so his presence will be a big boost against Alvin Kamara and the Saints' offense.

May miss Sunday
Carter (groin) is questionable for Sunday against the Saints.
Analysis: Carter has been a limited participant in practice all week and has yet to miss a game this season. With the status of fellow starting linebackers Shaq Thompson and Haason Reddick up in the air as well, the Panthers' linebacker unit could be depleted Sunday when they face the Saints.

Ties team lead
Carter finished with seven tackles (two solo) in Sunday's 31-14 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Carter tied Jeremy Chinn for Carolina's team lead in stops, bringing his season tally to 73 with three games left to play. In what's comfortably been his most productive season as a pro, Carter will strive to finish strong with a trio of divisional contests.

Secures starting role
Coach Matt Rhule named Carter as the starting middle linebacker Tuesday, Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old recorded 46 tackles (25 solo) in 16 games for the Panthers last season, and he showed well in training camp to earn the starting spot. Denzel Perryman, who signed a two-year, $6 million deal in the spring, was traded to the Raiders on Wednesday after being beat out by Carter.

Finishes season strong
Carter finished the 2020 season with 46 tackles (21 solo) and one fumble recovery in 16 games played.
Analysis: Carter played sparingly on defense through Carolina's first eight games but saw his role expanded during the second half of the season, when all but four of his tackles were recorded. As he now approaches the final year of his rookie contract, the former fifth-rounder will hope to maintain his starting position and corresponding production next season.

Starting against Lions
Carter will start at middle linebacker in Sunday's game against the Lions, Jonathan M. Alexander of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: Carter has usurped Tahir Whitehead as the Panthers' starting middle linebacker. Through 10 games this year, Carter has logged just 67 snaps on defense, and Sunday's game will be an opportunity for him to lock down the starting role moving forward.

Modest production in 2019
Carter notched 31 tackles (22 solo) and a half sack across 16 contests in 2019.
Analysis: Carter played a depth role in Carolina's linebacker corps for the majority of the season, but he was afforded the opportunity to close out the campaign with back-to-back starts while Shaq Thompson (shoulder) was sidelined. Much of the second-year player's production came Week 17 against the Saints, during which he recorded 11 tackles (eight solo). Carter stands to fill a reserve role in 2020, so he won't be on the fantasy radar in IDP formats.

Could start Week 16
Interim Coach Perry Fewell said Thursday that Carter will slot into the starting lineup if Shaq Thompson (ankle) is forced to miss any time, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Carter normally plays a depth role in Carolina's linebacker corps, but he could be in line to start in Indianapolis on Sunday with Thompson having missed back-to-back practices. The 2018 fifth-round pick could have limited fantasy value in deep IDP formats if Thompson indeed misses time.
