Returning to Detroit
Sudfeld and the Lions agreed to a contract Friday.
Analysis: Sudfeld will be back in Detroit next season after spending the 2022 campaign with the team. He'll likely operate as the top backup behind starting quarterback Jared Goff once again in 2023. Sudfeld has not thrown a pass in an NFL regular-season contest since 2020 and is unlikely to have much of an impact unless Goff goes down with an injury.

Will be No. 2 on Sunday
Sudfeld (illness) is active Sunday against the Vikings.
Analysis: Sudfeld didn't practice this week due to the illness, but he'll suit up Sunday against the Vikings. As long as Jared Goff stays healthy, Sudfeld will likely remain on the sidelines.

Dealing with illness
Sudfeld (illness) is questionable for Sunday's matchup against the Vikings.
Analysis: Sudfeld didn't practice all week due to an illness, but he still has a chance to suit up Sunday. If Sudfeld is deemed unavailable for Week 14, the Lions would likely elevate practice-squad quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the active roster to operate as the primary backup behind Jared Goff.

Signs with Detroit
Sudfeld was signed by the Lions on Wednesday.
Analysis: Sudfeld was cut by the 49ers on Tuesday, but he quickly found a new home with Detroit just one day later. The quarterback will operate as Jared Goff's only backup heading into the start of the regular season. David Blough was waived to create an open roster spot Wednesday.

Visiting with Lions
The Lions are expected to sign Sudfeld if he passes a physical Wednesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: The Lions have already cut the first of their two underwhelming backup QBs from this summer, Tim Boyle. David Blough would seem to be on the chopping block as well if Sudfeld indeed signs with the team.

Starting at Minnesota
Sudfeld is the Niners' starting quarterback for Saturday's preseason matchup at the Vikings, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Sudfeld was San Francisco's leading passer in the team's preseason opener versus Green Bay, which evidently was enough to earn him the start for Week 2 of the preseason with presumed starter Trey Lance sitting out. Pending a potential trade to send Jimmy Garoppolo elsewhere, Sudfeld is battling 2022 Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy for a backup spot on the initial 53-man roster, and he could give himself a leg up with another solid performance against Minnesota.

Sticking with 49ers
Sudfeld signed a reserve/future contract with the 49ers on Thursday.
Analysis: Sudfeld spent the majority of the 2021 season on the 49ers' practice squad, but was elevated to the active roster and a gameday inactive on four occasions. He could occupy the backup role in 2022 if Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) is traded, but San Francisco would likely bring in more competition at the position if that is the case.

Moves back to practice squad
Sudfeld reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: Sudfeld has spent several games with the active roster this season, serving as the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback on the positional depth chart. However, he never appeared in a game.

Elevated from practice squad
Sudfeld was elevated to the 49ers' active roster from their practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Rams, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Sudfeld was elevated to the active roster several times during the regular season but didn't appear in any games. He'll serve as the No. 3 quarterback behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo and backup Trey Lance on Sunday.

Sent back to practice squad
Sudfeld reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday.
Analysis: Sudfeld was elevated to serve as Trey Lance's backup with Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) out against the Texans. The Indiana product could again get the call in Week 18 depending on Garappolo's health.

Bumped up from practice squad
Sudfeld was elevated to the 49ers' active roster from the practice squad Friday.
Analysis: Sudfeld will be the No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Texans, with Jimmy Garoppolo doubtful due to a thumb injury. Sudfeld has appeared in four NFL games in his career, all with the Eagles and spread out between 2017 and 2020. The 28-year-old has completed 25 of 37 passes for 188 yards, one touchdown and an interception in his career.

Back to practice squad
Sudfeld reverted to San Francisco's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: Sudfeld was elevated to the active roster ahead of the 49ers' Week 7 tilt against the Colts to serve as Jimmy Garoppolo's backup. Though he was active, Sudfield did not play with Garoppolo handling all of the duties at quarterback. With rookie Trey Lance nearing a return, Sudfeld may not be elevated to the active roster again any time soon.

Elevated to active roster
Sudfeld was elevated to the 49ers' active roster from the practice squad Saturday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Sudfeld was brought up to the active roster ahead of the 49ers' Week 5 matchup with the Cardinals to serve as Trey Lance's backup, as Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) was inactive. However, in Week 7, he will be serving as Garoppolo's backup with Lance (knee) sidelined.

Reverts to practice squad
Sudfeld reverted to the 49ers' practice squad following Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old didn't appear in Sunday's Week 5 matchup while working behind Trey Lance. If Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) is cleared to return after the 49ers' bye week, Sudfeld will likely remain on the practice squad.

Elevated by San Francisco
Sudfeld was elevated from the 49ers' practice squad Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Sudfeld will serve as the backup quarterback behind Trey Lance against the Cardinals on Sunday since Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) has been ruled out. The 28-year-old Sudfeld made one appearance with the Eagles last year and completed five of 12 passes for 32 yards and an interception while rushing twice for 12 yards.

Receives walking papers
Sudfeld was released by the 49ers on Tuesday, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.
Analysis: Sudfeld played in the season finale for the Eagles last season and completed five of 12 passes for 32 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. With Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance (finger) on the final roster, there was no room for a developmental quarterback. Sudfeld could land on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Inks with 49ers
The 49ers signed Sudfeld to a one-year contract Wednesday.
Analysis: Sudfeld will join a crowded quarterback room in San Francisco that already includes Josh Rosen and Josh Johnson as depth options behind Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle). The 49ers could also invest their No. 3 overall pick in April's draft into a signal-caller, so the addition of Sudfeld could create robust competition even for the third spot on the depth chart.

Gets into one game in 2020
Sudfeld completed five of his 12 pass attempts for 32 yards and an interception in his lone appearance during the 2020 season.
Analysis: Sudfeld didn't see the field until the regular-season finale versus Washington, when Carson Wentz was a healthy inactive for the contest. Head coach Doug Pederson then elected to bench an ineffective Jalen Hurts for the second half of that contest, allowing Sudfeld to get some snaps in the final two quarters. The 27-year-old is due to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and the fact that Pederson has since been dismissed could hurt Sudfeld's chances of sticking around in…read more

Inactive Week 2
Sudfeld (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Rams.
Analysis: The nature of the Eagles' decision is not yet known, but either rookie Jalen Hurts has vaulted Sudfeld for the No. 2 QB role, or the former will take the field Sunday for particular sub packages. In any case, Sudfeld won't get a chance to see the field Week 2.

Beginning 2020 as backup
Sudfeld is listed as the No. 2 quarterback on Philadelphia's first unofficial depth chart, Martin Frank of The Delaware News Journal reports.
Analysis: Sudfeld beat out Jalen Hurts for the backup gig in training camp. Though the Eagles no doubt envision the rookie second-round pick eventually climbing the depth chart, the job will be Sudfeld's to lose to kick off the 2020 campaign. Sudfeld didn't play in 2019, and he's only logged three appearances through his first three years with the Eagles, but his familiarity with the organization and scheme is an invaluable asset coming off an abbreviated offseason.

Frontrunner for backup job
Eagles coach Doug Pederson suggested Tuesday that while Sudfeld will have to compete for the team's backup quarterback job, he expects the 26-year-old to beat out rookie Jalen Hurts for the No. 2 job behind starter Carson Wentz, Matt Mullin of PhillyVoice.com reports. "Football teams are going to have to rely on their veteran players, and Nate is one of those guys for us. I have a ton of confidence in Nate to become the backup quarterback," Pederson said. "Nothing is ever handed to anybody, and we always try to create competition at every position, and quarterback is not exempt from that. But I fully expect Nate to come in and be aggressive and do the things that he's capable of doing and become the backup to Carson."
Analysis: Sudfeld made appearances in only three regular-season games through his first three years in the organization, completing 20 of 25 attempts for 156 yards and one touchdown. He dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart in 2019 after the Eagles signed veteran Josh McCown last August, but he'll head into training camp second in the pecking order after McCown wasn't re-signed. While the Eagles clearly have big plans for Hurts after nabbing him with the No. 53 overall pick in April's draft, the…read more

Staying in Philly
Sudfeld is re-signing with Philadelphia on a one-year contract.
Analysis: Sudfeld received a second-round tender as a restricted free agent last offseason, with the Eagles presumably intending for him to serve as their No. 2 quarterback. The team later signed Josh McCown after Sudfeld suffered a broken wrist during preseason play, thus relegating the 26-year-old to No. 3 status even after he returned to health. With a January report suggesting McCown wants to continue his football career, Sudfeld may be looking at another year as the No. 3 QB, assuming the Eagles…read more

Doesn't play in 2019
Sudfeld wasn't active for any of the Eagles' 16 games in the 2019 season.
Analysis: The Eagles clearly think highly of Sudfeld's potential, as they paid him $3.1 million in 2019 to serve as the No. 3 quarterback behind Carson Wentz (head) and Josh McCown (hamstring). If McCown doesn't return for another season -- the 40-year-old suffered a torn hamstring in the postseason -- Sudfeld could become Wentz's primary backup in 2020 should he be re-signed. Sudfeld is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March.
